Build a calculator with AI
Describe numeric inputs and expected outputs, test the formula preview, and add the tool only after checking it.
Before you start
- Sign in as the workspace owner or an admin. Read-only members cannot change workspace content.
- Have AI credits available. Review the proposed result before applying changes.
- Know the formula assumptions and at least one example with a known correct answer.
Step-by-step walkthrough
Step 1
Open Build with AI
Select the department that needs the calculator and choose Build with AI. The dialog is titled Build a feature with AI.
Step 2
Describe inputs, units and outputs
Specify what the user enters and what should be calculated. Example: “Enter revenue and total costs in dollars; show profit as revenue minus costs and margin as profit divided by revenue.”
Step 3
Build and test the preview
Select Build feature. If the request is supported, use Preview — try it to enter known values. Check rounding, zero values and unit assumptions before approval.
Step 4
Approve the checked tool
Select Approve & add only when the output matches your known examples. Use Discard if wrong. Tools are numeric inputs and safe formulas, not arbitrary code or automatic third-party integrations.
Practical example
A known margin calculation
For revenue of $1,000 and costs of $600, expected profit is $400 and margin is 40%. If the preview does not match, discard and clarify the formula.
Common issues and fixes
- AI says the feature is not feasible
- Narrow it to a numeric calculator. Requests involving arbitrary code or live external systems are not what this feature builds.
- The result is blank or invalid
- Check missing inputs, zero denominators and formula assumptions. Do not approve a financial tool without testing edge cases.
What success looks like
A formula-based department tool whose output you have checked before adding it.
